Medical Technologist (MT/MLT) – Full-Time

Job Summary

  • Responsible for proper patient identification, sample collection, specimen labeling, sample processing, and result reporting.
  • Includes operation of all instruments in the laboratory including maintenance, reagent preparation and replacement, calibrations, quality control, patient sample testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform testing including waived testing such as pregnancy tests, influenza testing, etc.
  • Must be able to perform basic blood banking procedures such as blood typing, antibody screening, and crossmatching units.
  • Reference lab specimens must be prepared and processed daily, including drug screen collections.
  • Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training, experience, and technical abilities.
  • Follow laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and must correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory general supervisor, technical supervisor, or director.
  • Assist the lab manager with various tasks such as inventory and ordering, quality control review, and keeping maintenance logs current.
  • Responsible for collecting specimens at nursing homes, with travel to these facilities as necessary. Mileage will be reimbursed for out-of-town travel.
  • Students for phlebotomy and MLT rotate through the lab, and all laboratory personnel share responsibility for their training.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of Associates degree
  • Current National Certification and Louisiana State License
  • Current CPR/BLS and MOAB (available onsite, if applicable)

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform phlebotomy in addition to performing laboratory testing.
  • Required to participate in proficiency testing in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Physical demands include mobility, reaching, bending and balancing, kneeling, talking, typing, sitting, carrying, standing, grasping, and fine hand coordination.
  • Must occasionally lift or move items up to 30 pounds.
  • May be required to assist in administering emergency life-sustaining procedures.
  • Must be able to work independently when collecting samples at the nursing homes.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency with computers is required.
  • Punctuality is a must.
